Not every Hermès bag hits the zeitgeist like the Birkin and Kelly. Some pieces slip quietly into the Maison’s universe, appearing without runway moments or fanfare, yet still make an impression.
One such piece has quietly appeared on the Hermès online boutique: the Neo Madere bag, part of the Maison’s women’s offering launched in Fall-Winter 2022. Inspired by the Madere laundry bag from the 1960s, this model revisits a utilitarian object through a distinctly Hermès lens. The result is a format that is elongated, softly structured, and deliberately unfussy.

At first glance, the bag’s elongated, low-slung proportions recall the horizontal silhouette of a shoulder Birkin. Measuring approximately 17.3 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches, it occupies a low, horizontal silhouette more reminiscent of a carryall than a traditional handbag. Finished with a secure zip-top fastening, the leather zip pulls threads through a small metal loop, and can be secured in place with a padlock — a detail shared with the iconic Hermès Bolide bag. A practical interior pocket keeps essentials organized while maintaining the Neo Madere’s streamlined silhouette.

The materials do much of the talking. The Neo Madere is crafted with a Togo calfskin body, which develops a natural slouch over time with wear. High contrast white saddle-stitching traces the base of the handles, while vertical stitches trace the sides of the bag, while palladium-plated hardware keeps the overall look cool and restrained. The bag is paired with rigid Hunter cowhide hand-shaped leather handles, inspired by vintage Hermès travel trunks, creating a tactile contrast and additional structure. Completing the look, is a matching Hunter cowhide key clochette – adding a signature Hermès accent to the otherwise fuss-free handbag.

Void of additional shoulder straps or fussy design details, the Neo Madere is intended exclusively for hand carry, reinforcing its low-profile and architectural silhouette. Its sleek proportions allow it to be clutched elegantly under the arm or be held comfortably in hand.

Ultimately, the Neo Madere shows how Hermès can reinterpret a heritage design for a modern context. Subtle details and thoughtful proportions take the spotlight instead of logo2s or flashy branding, revealing the Maison’s balance of history, craftsmanship, and practicality.
