Hermès and horses have always gone hand in hand — from the stables of 1837 to the runways of 2025. Long before bags became holy grail status, Hermès was crafting saddles, bridles, and riding gear for European nobility. That equestrian heritage still runs deep today, and shines through in the Della Cavalleria, first introduced in the Fall-Winter 2020 collectsion.

Heritage Meets Modern Design
Part saddle, part statement piece, the Della Cavalleria trots the line between minimalist elegance and subtle show-stopping flair. Its signature horse-bit clasp, curved flap, and sculptural silhouette strike the balance between timeless craftsmanship and everyday wearability, while accordion-style gussets allow the bag to expand with ease.

At the heart of the design is the signature horse-bit clasp, inspired by the Verdun half-bit. Equal parts function and style, it secures the flap while gracefully curving around the bag, shaping the silhouette and evoking the contours of Hermès saddles. The metal hasp at the base attaches to a minimalist mechanism, allowing the clasp to open and close with precision.

Functional touches include a back slip pocket and an interior card slot, while the adjustable leather strap attaches to the back of the bag, giving the impression that it extends seamlessly from the body itself. With a drop ranging from approximately 37.8 to 46.7 inches, it adapts to shoulder or crossbody wear with ease. Minimalist yet distinctive, the Della Cavalleria balances heritage with everyday functionality.

The story doesn’t stop with the original Della Cavalleria. Hermès has extended the narrative, and the silhouette with the introduction of the Della Cavalleria Elan, a sleek elongated take on the original.
Della Cavalleria Elan
Introduced in Spring-Summer 2023, the Della Cavalleria Elan reimagines the original 2020 silhouette in an east-west design. Retaining the signature horse-bit clasp and curved underside, this version offers a slightly roomier interior with a back slip pocket and interior card slot. Unlike the original, the Elan’s strap attaches to the sides via discreet D-rings, offering a range of 27–44 inches for versatile shoulder or crossbody wear.

The Della Cavalleria’s Leather Lineup
The Della Cavalleria is available in a small, considered lineup of leathers, primarily Epsom and Tadelakt, with select exotic versions released occasionally.
Here are the key features of the leathers used in the Della Cavalleria collectsion:

Epsom
Structured and durable, Epsom calfskin is defined by its embossed, cross-hatched grain. Lightweight yet resilient, it maintains the Della Cavalleria’s form and accordion-style design, all the while offering excellent scratch resistance and vibrant color retention. A polished yet practical choice, Epsom suits everyday wear while preserving the bag’s striking silhouette.

Tadelakt
Often mistaken for Box calfskin, Tadelakt leather features a smooth, almost lustrous finish that accentuates the bag’s curves. Slightly more delicate, it is a less common choice with an elegant vibe.

Alligator Mississippiensis
Exotic variations of the Della Cavalleria are occasionally found in Alligator Mississippiensis. While it may resemble Crocodile skin at first glance, Alligator is known for its smaller, more uniform scales. Its sturdy nature makes it ideal for compact, structured bags, and it is most commonly offered in Hermès’ signature matte finish, which enhances the leather’s texture.

Sizing Up the Della Cavalleria
The Della Cavalleria originally launched in a PM size larger than the current Mini, though this edition has since been discontinued. Today, the bag is offered in two sizes—the Mini and the Elan.
| Della Cavalleria Style | Dimensions (inches) | Dimensions (cm) |
| Della Cavalleria Mini | 7.1 x 6.3 x 3.1 | 18 x 16 x 8 |

Della Cavalleria Mini
Compact but surprisingly spacious, the Mini Della Cavalleria fits your daily essentials with ease: phone (even larger models without a case), keys, cardholder or small wallet, lip balm, and hand sanitizer. The back slip pocket and interior slot provide easy access to cards or tickets. Some phones may fit, however it risks stretching or distorting the leather.

Della Cavalleria Elan
Slightly longer and more refined, the Elan accommodates essentials like a phone, wallet or cardholder, keys, lip balm, and sunglasses. It also fits a mini pochette or small wallet inside, with extra storage in the back slip pocket. While surprisingly roomy for its streamlined size, bulkier items like oversized sunglasses or larger cases may need to be left behind.

The Della Cavalleria Color Palette
The Della Cavalleria is offered in timeless neutrals like Noir, Gold, Poussière, Craie, and Ardoise, ideal for everyday wear. Seasonal shades and brights such as Terre Battue, Vert Fizz, and Bleu Céleste add bold, eye-catching flair. Gold or palladium plated hardware provides the finishing touch, subtly complementing each hue.

From Saddle to Shoulder
Both the Della Cavalleria Mini and Elan feature adjustable leather straps, accommodating both crossbody and shoulder wear. While both styles may feel slightly bulky when worn crossbody–a result of their structured design and premium leather–their practical dimensions make them excellent choices for daily use. Sleek and sculptural, both styles transition effortlessly from day to night, bringing Hermès’ signature equestrian-inspired elegance to any look.
